Frequently Asked Questions

We know that it can be daunting competing at a new competition for the first time.

Below we have compiled a list of the most commonly asked questions to assist you.

Q: My variation is not included on the list of approved repertoire - Can I still compete it?

A: There are various reasons that a variation may have been omitted from the approved repertoire list such as length, appropriateness or licensing/copyright issues. Please email info@miamiibc.org if you would like to enquire about a variation that is not currently listed.

Q: How many photos/videos are included in the mandatory photo and video fee?

A: The photo/video fee includes 3 photos and one video. If you would like to purchase additional photos or videos please contact the photographer and videographer directly.

Q: I am competing the MIBC contemporary variation how can I upload the music?

A: The music file can be provided upon request. Please email info@miamiibc.org to request the mp3 file.

Q: I am competing multiple variations and/or in multiple categories. Will I have time to change?

A:  MIBC considers 7 pieces between contemporary pieces and 10 pieces between classical variations sufficient time to change. 

Q: What should I wear for masterclasses?

A: Female competitors should wear a leotard (any color, no skirt) , ballet tights and soft ballet shoes for ballet classes. Male competitors should wear a fitted shirt or leotard, ballet tights and soft ballet shoes. For contemporary classes competitors may wear contemporary socks or bare feet. 

Q: Can I rent a studio to rehearse?

A: Studios are available to rent for rehearsals. Studio rental slots will become available to book 10 days before the competition begins. 

Q: Do all competitors perform in the grand finale?

A: Only dancers participating in the Individual or Pas de Deux categories perform in the grand finale.

Q: Can ensemble competitors participate in masterclasses?

A: Ensemble competitors can participate in masterclasses at the studios but must register and pay online at least 5 days before the competition begins. Due to capacity restrictions ensemble competitors cannot register and take any classes on stage at the theatre. 

Q: What is the uniform for the Grand Finale?

A: Female competitors should wear a black, spaghetti strap leotard, black wrap skirt, ballet tights and either soft ballet shoes or pointe shoes . Male Competitors should wear a white fitted shirt or leotard, Black tights, white socks and white shoes. 

Q: I am injured and unable to compete - Can I get a refund?

A: MIBC does not issue refunds for any reason. If you are unable to compete due to illness or injury MIBC will hold your registration for the following year provided you email us with a doctors note. 

Q: I would like to adjust my music and/or variation- Is this possible?

A: If you would like to change your music or variation after you have completed your final registration please email info@miamiibc.org with the updated information, including the name listed on your registration  and the title of your variation. If you are changing your variation please also include the music file and technical details for your new variation. Per MIBC regulations, participants who request an adjustment less than 2 weeks before the start of the competition will be charged a $50 fee.

Q: My Pas de Deux partner falls into a different age category, what age division should we register in?

A: Your age division is calculated by the average age of the competitors.

Q: I noticed an error in the spelling of my name - Can this be corrected?

A: MIBC uses your name as listed on your registration form. If you notice an error in the spelling of your name please let us know as soon as possible. If the spelling is incorrect on your diploma a replacement will be issued only if the spelling is correct on your registration and the error was a typo made by MIBC.

Q: I noticed that there are students of a jury member competing - How does MIBC ensure a fair competition?

A: If a jury member has students competing they will be replaced by another jury member on the panel whilst their students compete. The jury member will also be asked to step out of the deliberation if anything regarding their students is being discussed. 

Q: My scoresheet states I received a bronze medal score - why did I not receive a medal?

A: Only the 3 highest scoring dancers will receive a medal unless in the case of a tie. MIBC recognises a tie when there is a difference of 0.1 points or less. 

Q: Will the masterclasses or competition be live-streamed?

A: Some masterclasses will be live-streamed on the MIBC instagram at @miamiibc. Competition rounds are not publicly live-streamed due to copyright laws. 

Q: I lost my badge/number - Can I get a replacement? 

A: Replacement badges can be purchased for a fee of $10. Replacement numbers can be purchased for a fee of $5. If you have lost your badge or number please find a member of our team to assist you.
